Being a mom makes you six times less likely to get hired.

While moms who took a break to stay home and care for their child, face an even greater bias when looking to return to the workforce.

That’s why this Mother’s Day, we came up with the Trojan Bouquet.

Flowers wrapped in the resumes of moms looking to get back to work.

Sent to moms in hiring roles across the advertising industry.

Because moms deserve more than flowers. They deserve equal opportunities.

Let more moms' opportunities bloom, by implementing your own momternship program, following the toolkit below.

Employer Toolkit

  • According to a 2023 survey from Indeed, 93% of stay-at-home moms have experienced challenges when reentering the workforce. And a Harvard study found that moms were six times less likely than non-mothers and 3.35 times less likely than child-free men to be recommended for hire.

The program aims to address the employment penalty many mothers face after taking time away from work. Our goal is to celebrate moms’ unique skillsets and help them reenter the workforce with the support and empathy they deserve—no advertising or PR experience required.

  • The Momternship program centers the needs and experiences of working mothers to address how they have been disproportionately affected both historically and currently within the workforce.

  • A Momternship is a professional internship opportunity for mothers who have stepped away from their careers to care for their families and want to return to the workforce with the empathy and support they need to thrive. MullenLowe designed the program to support moms who want to reenter the workforce and reinvent themselves in new pursuits. Momterns will follow the same hybrid schedule as the rest of our employees and report in person to the office two days a week, so they can create flexible schedules.

    • A temporary placement as a team member, participating, learning, and actively shadowing other team members in one specific business unit, e.g., account, creative, strategy, PR, production, HR, new business, or behavioral sciences

    •Flexible hours; $25 an hour

    • Useful memberships in community and skill-building groups, including HeyMama, She Runs It, and Empowership

    • Networking, mentorship, sponsorship, training, and coaching

    • Lunch-and-learn sessions that provide moms with insights into résumé writing, understanding social media, building resistance, managing their personal brands, and understanding a healthy work-life balance

  • Moms are busy. Make applying easy, straightforward, and approachable.

We recommend not requiring any prior industry experience or an explanation of a gap on a mother’s resume. Instead, ask applicants to summarize why they want to participate, what skills they learned in previous careers or during their caregiving breaks that they will apply, and what they hope to get out of the Momternship.

We suggest asking applicants to submit a short video (two minutes max) or a brief written submission (no more than 300 words).

  • • Hybrid working arrangements and flexible hours

    • A formalized onboarding program, check-ins, and support

    • On-the-job training with real work exposure

    • Professional and tech training (if needed)

    • Mentorship, sponsorship, and networking opportunities

    • Exposure to various functions, departments, leaders, and projects
